PADI Instructor Development Course
Signing up for the PADI Instructor Development course (IDC) is the first step to the rest of your underwater life. Under the guidance of your PADI Course Director, you will learn the skills and confidence to teach safe and enjoyable scuba courses.
A combination of the PADI Assistant Instructor and PADI OWSI (Open Water Scuba Instructor) Courses, the PADI IDC will provide you with the blueprint to handle real life students. Over 8 days, through a mixture of confined and open water training as well as theory workshops, you’ll earn one of the most sought-after credentials in the scuba diving world.
The PADI digital eLearning Crewpak allows you to complete a series of online presentations about the PADI system, risk management and more. Allowing you to prepare before you start the Instructor course at your own pace — via your mobile phone, tablet or PC.
Once you have successfully completed the PADI IDC course, you will then go on to attend a PADI Instructor Exam (IE) — where you will have the chance to show off your newly attained skills.
You will also need to have an active Emergency First Response EFR Primary and Secondary Care Instructor certification in order to teach after your IE. This is a standalone course which is usually scheduled just before your IDC.
Once the IE is completed and the celebrations are over, your journey doesn’t stop there. You will have the chance to continue your education by gaining Instructor Speciality ratings through the Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT) preparation course.

What Duties Can a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor Fulfil after Certification?
Becoming a PADI Instructor is the gateway to teaching scuba diving but what exactly will you be qualified to do? Once in teaching status you will be able to teach:
- PADI Scuba Diver and Open Water Courses.
- PADI Advanced Open Water Courses and Adventure Diver.
- PADI Rescue Diver Courses.
- PADI Divemaster Courses.
- PADI Discover Scuba, Bubblemaker and Seal Team programs.
- Peak Performance Buoyancy, Project AWARE and Coral Reef Conservation Specialty Courses.
PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor Course Prerequisites
The IE prerequisites have also been included below, so that as soon as you complete the IDC, you will be eligible to join an IE and start teaching as soon as possible.
- Minimum age: 18 years old.
- Certified diver for at least 6 months.
- Proof of 100 logged dives — with experience of deep diving, night diving and underwater navigation.
- Hold a PADI Divemaster certification (or equivalent from another dive training organisation).
- Hold fit-to-dive medical that has been signed by a physician within the last 6 months.
- Be an in status certified in Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care Instructor (or equivalent from another agency).
- Provide documentation for any non PADI certifications as required — entry level, advanced, rescue and leadership level.
